«Хто йде вперед, той завше блудить»: до концепції людини у трагедії Гете «Фауст»

Abstract
(en) In the article, based on the analysis of the original text and the Ukrainian and Russian translations, there has been considered the embodiment of the moral-aesthetic position of Goethe, his conception of a human in the tragedy «Faust». Due to a great number of translations of the work, the Ukrainian reader can at maximum extent come close to achieving Goethe' s understanding of a human' s place in the world. The comparative analysis of the original and its translations into congenerous languages become an additional source of interpretation. The focus of the author – is the final of the tragedy, the fifth action of the second part. The main character of the work is in the thrall of dreams about the future happy life that he will arrange for the people at the seaside, having won a piece of a land from the sea. The author emphasizes upon the negative changes in behavior and worldviews of Faust, who completely relies on Mephisto: the main character is annoyed with the church bells, Baucis and Philemon, who do not want forced happiness. I n the analyzed translations of M. Lukash, B. Pasternak and word for word translation by N. Voronkova, it is traced the relationship of Faust with evil spirit on the lexical level, it is confirmed infernal, apocalyptical character of his activity: human wounds bled, crying sounded at night, ardent heat went into the sea. The author considers it to be symbolic that Faust, who, having believed in his own infallibility, got rid of any doubts about the correctness of his actions, lost his vision. The gloom that envelops the main character, is the evidence of not only his physical blindness, but above all it is an indicator of his soul blindness. Blind Faust represents Humanity which, having forgotten about the soul, blind with thirst for power, maintains its own greatness conceitedly, deceptively seeing shovels clank of the lemurs, digging a grave for him, for implementation and embodiment of his intentions. It has been confirmed the idea of artificial straightening, varnishing of the image of Faust by the Soviet Study of Literature and one-sided negative interpretation of it by the post-Soviet criticism. I t has been highlighted the complexity and ambiguity of the image of Faust. The author believes that the main thing in Goethe' s worldview and creativity – is upholding of the values of human life, denying any extra-target that justifies the sacrifices for the sake of the ideological dogma. The image of Faust helps to come to the opinion that only by means of mind, with the help of objective knowledge it is impossible to understand the meaning of a human being on the Earth. The higher truth can be learnt only by wisdom, which includes irrational knowledge and faith. A prominent place in the ethical system of Goethe has not been occupied so much by glorifying of a man, but how much by faith in one' s mercy, power of love, which is able to revive the soul.
